SMELL THE ROSES
Put off by the things Paul Westerberg has said about his stint in Guns N’ Roses — including a quote that ran in a Nov. 10 article in the Star Tribune —Tommy Stinson gave the Pioneer Press the exclusive lowdown on where things stand between the two former Replacements last week.
“He blew it,” Stinson told the PP, emphasizing that a reunion with Westerberg is never likely. The trouble, the bassist said, is that Westerberg “has gone out on a limb to say a bunch of nonsense that's made
me look bad, [and] that’s made Axl look bad.”
Coincidentally, one of Axl’s former bandmates also spoke up in an e-mail to me last week. Original GNR bassist Duff McKagan wanted to clarify that he was not fired from the band but left on his own accord. In turn, I asked him about the record he’s making with the other original Gunners, including Slash and Izzy Stradlin, and he mentioned two more names they’re looking at as possible singers: Sebastian Bach and Mike Patton. I wise-acrely suggested they contact Westerberg, to which McKagan responded, “Not a bad idea.
