"HEAVY METAL" SEQUEL SOUNDTRACK NABS MONSTER MAGNET, ZOMBIE, AND AXL?

The legendary animated feature "Heavy Metal," which spawned one of the most revered soundtracks of the AOR era, is being followed up with what looks to be a worthy successor. "Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2," produced by Kevin Eastman, is about to wrap up production and should be out later this year.

Music supervisor Bruce Berman confirms that he is in talks with Axl Rose to include a new Guns N' Roses song in the movie, although it's not expected to appear on the soundtrack album. A source close to Rose says the singer is into the project, but he may or may not be able to work out a schedule that will allow him to participate.

Another track that is verging on confirmed is a new song from the revamped Days Of the New, a.k.a. Travis Meeks. Like Rose, Meeks also shed his entire band. Meeks' new crew has a Louisville recording studio booked for this week.

Cuts confirmed for "F.A.K.K." include a new song from Monster Magnet (produced for the occasion by Bob Ezrin); the debut from the new Tommy Lee/Snoop Dogg collaboration; a Rob Zombie remix courtesy of Nine Inch Nails/White Zombie associate Charlie Clouser; a yet-to-be-determined Powerman 5000 remix; and a track by Static X. Rumored to be in discussions are tracks from the Insane Clown Posse, Creed, and Stone Temple Pilots.

Michael Langevin and Denis d'Amour, two members of Montreal's Voivod, are providing much of the score. Billy Idol is furnishing one of the featured voices in the picture, and organizers are also said to have approached Pamela Anderson Lee.

The original "Heavy Metal" made its debut in 1981. The animated film included the voices of John Candy and Harold Ramis and the music of Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, and Stevie Nicks.

The new film has confirmed video distribution through Sony's Columbia/Tristar, and the soundtrack is being issued by Restless Records. A deal for the feature's theatrical release is still being worked on.

The 1999 version of "Heavy Metal" also boasts another spinoff. Ritual Entertainment will be producing the "Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2" game for PCs.
