Walking Papers, Walking Papers
Album Review
by Josh Gross @TheJoshGross
The seductive neo-blues of Seattle's The Missionary Position is already one the most compelling sounds in the Northwest. But a dose of star power rarely hurts, and that's just what the band's sound gets with Walking Papers, a new collaboration between The Missionary Position's singer and guitarist Jefferson Angell, Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees and Guns 'n' Roses alum Duff McKagan.
The band's debut self-titled album, released Oct. 2, also features Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
Because of the distinctiveness of Angell's richly toned blues moan and guitar work, much of the album follows in the vein of the two existing Missionary Position albums, especially on early tracks like "Your Secret's Safe with Me" and "Red Envelopes."
Walking Papers really sets itself apart when it puts aside the fuzz guitar and explores blues territory more in the vein of Tom Waits than the proto-grunge of John Lee Hooker.
"A Place Like This" has a lagging Latin beat with sparse tremolo guitar and flourishes of trumpet. It apes the seduction Angell's work is known for but with a restrained, evil jazz sound like a smooth "Jockey Full of Bourbon"-era Tom Waits.
It is followed by "Independence Day," a driving tune with watery guitar textures layered over driving, come-hither fuzz riffs.
On the whole, Walking Papers' debut album is cleanly split between two sounds: big blues rock riffs and spooky vocals, and more experimental tracks. Both are solid work, but listeners may find themselves skipping back and forth between the sound they prefer.

"evil jazz"
drummer is a groove monster - brings my mind to Sir Lord Baltimore or even Buddy Miles

I just put Walking Papers posts in the wrong (albeit related at least) thread. I mean to put it in this one.
DOH!
cut and paste
A full mini-show in a radio station
and a live clip of one of my favorite songs from the album but the fan recording it is in a bit of a mosh sometimes so if you are prone to seasickness LOOK AWAY and listen

Currently touring Germany - unfortunately all gigs too far away from my home.

Sympathy to you. I know that feeling, I have missed most of my favorite bands' live shows for that reason, or because I was skint. That is why I haunt YouTube I guess.Uli wrote:Currently touring Germany - unfortunately all gigs too far away from my home.

I sure hope that acoustic set ends up in YouTube with decent audio for me (among others) to enjoy.

Now I'm confused, as the 2nd post in this thread says the album was out in Oct 2012. Or is this the UK release they're talking about?

I am confused too, I guess it must be a UK release they are talking about, because they DID release a self-titled record in 2012 according to wikipedia.

Re: Duff McKagan's latest collaboration: Walking Papers
Rumour has it that the band are to play two surprise club gigs in Germany this month (June 23/24) in Ingolstadt and Frankfurt. Must look which town is closer to my home, maybe (just maybe) I can make it. More details when I find them...
Edit: ok, found these tour dates:
http://www.songkick.com/artists/5875959-walking-papers/calendar
Ingolstadt is not too far, it's a Sunday, so I might use the chance to visit Ingolstadt, do a little bit of sightseeing and then hang around the club...

Re: Duff McKagan's latest collaboration: Walking Papers
I was in Songkick last night looking up tour dates for Walking Papers and for Kings of Chaos. Looks to me like June will be a whirlwind of touring and traveling for Duff McKagan - He will deserve the best of audience appreciation for showing up and delivering. I hope you do get to see Walking Papers Uli, and I hope Duff gets to chill a bit by July. Whew!

Re: Duff McKagan's latest collaboration: Walking Papers
Yeah, Duff is very busy these days (but I guess he's a "frequent flyer" anyway and has many bonus miles)! Meanwhile Munich was added to the Walking Papers dates on June 22nd. I might aim for that one, will see if an old mate will come along (if he can get a day off on Monday 24th, we might go to Ingolstadt, if not we might prefer Munich on a Saturday night)...

Mystery solved. The album was released by the band independently in 2012. Now it has the backing of a record company with staff for August 6th release, per link tweeted by Duff I see in GN'R Twitters widget in the side bar, tweet includes link to new lyric video of the single, The Whole World's Watching.

After the cancellation of the two shows in south Germany, I'm hoping the band will come here later.

Re: Duff McKagan's latest collaboration: Walking Papers
excerpted from Billboard article just published
it won't let me link it but here is address for the source: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/4432271/duff-mckagan-on-walking-papers-velvet-revolvers-future-and-scott-weilands
The group has also continued writing and has more than 20 new songs, according to McKagan, some of which Walking Papers is playing live.
"The songs are a little bigger I suppose, because when you write with a band it's always bigger than if one guy sits down and writes a song," he says. "It's just progressing."
So... I'm gonna hear new songs at the Uproar Festival shows next month methinks

Re: Duff McKagan's latest collaboration: Walking Papers
the Village Voice blog - an interview/article beautifully written
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2013/08/walking_papers_duff_mckagan.php
I want to write a fan review of the Uproar Festival shows I just attended but Jeff Angell made such a fan girl out of me I need to gather my wits before I can write. I tried really hard to be cool but resistance was futile.

Ha ha, okay, just calm down a bit and write your review when you're ready to do so.
No hurry, but I'm looking forward to it.
