Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy Release Means Free Dr Pepper For All

Company plans to issue free-soda coupons, but won't give details until band confirms release date.

By Chris Harris

This past March, when Dr Pepper announced it would give every man, woman and child in the U.S. a free can of the soft drink should issue its oft-delayed LP Chinese Democracy before the close of 2008, it seemed like nothing more than a marketing scheme — not to mention a promise the beverage concocters probably wouldn't have to make good on.

But now that Chinese Democracy has a solid release date of November 25 (though the band's label, management and frontman Axl Rose have yet to confirm as much), it looks like the company is going to end up giving away a lot of pop.

According to a spokesperson for the company, full details of Dr Pepper's rollout plan won't be released until Guns N' Roses go on the record about the release date, despite the fact that Best Buy has already begun taking online pre-orders for the disc. Best Buy will be the sole retail purveyor of the set, as part of an exclusive deal announced late last month.

Chinese Democracy will feature 14 tracks, including "Scraped," "Shackler's Revenge" (which appears on the new "Rock Band 2" video game), "Street of Dreams," "If the World" (which accompanies the closing credits of Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe's "Body of Lies") and "This I Love."

The Dr Pepper spokesperson told MTV News that, while additional details will be forthcoming, the company's plan to distribute free cans of its product will involve some sort of an online coupon system. "People will go on Dr Pepper's Web site and we will send them a coupon for a free one," the spokesperson confirmed. "It's going to be real easy."
