Guns N' Roses started to cover this iconic Soundgarden song after the tragic death of Chris Cornell in 2017. The first performance was at Slane Castle, on May 27, 2017. Cornell was found dead on May 18. In total it has, as of {UPDATEDATE}, at least been played {BLACKHOLESUNSONGS} times.

Not many get to see the band debut a new song. Although the circumstances here are really tragic.

Undoubtedly it was very emotional moment - for me and for the band. I had read that they had been rehearsing BHS the day before, but I might expect them to play some part of the song, I did not expect Axl to sing. It was one day after Chris's funeral. There was a moment of surprise and even tears in the eyes. I think everyone in the band was really excited. It was emotional to me, because Chris's death was quite "personal" for me. Last year I attend two of his aqoustic concerts (In Rome and the Antique theater in Plovdiv) and even in Rome we met him in the park ....

Lucky you!!! Chris Cornell is probably my favorite artist/singer! I was supposed to go see one of his shows in Copenhagen some time ago, but when I got around to order tickets it was sold out Sad

I have been listening to his song book record a lot lately. Fortuntately I did get to see him live once, with Audioslave.

They had [their daughters] two weeks apart, and we hung out with them and our babies. That's just real-life shit, and then Chris going... the fucking weird thing about that is, that night, about 8 o'clock at night, Axl came into rehearsal and said, 'Let's do 'Black Hole Sun'. You know, we started doing the Glen Campbell song after he died as a tribute to him. We started doing Black Hole Sun after Chris died. We started doing Melissa after Gregg Allman died, you know? And they all sort of started organically, like one of us just played it and then people started picking up on it. Like, that's why I started playing it and then Slash came out and played on top of it.

Slash would comment on why they kept Black Hole Sun in the set after they first played it as a tribute to Chris Cornell after his suicide:

It just became something that we don’t feel comfortable taking out of the set now.
