Guns N’ Roses video filmed in Gulf

GALVESTON — It was business as usual Wednesday in Galveston — unless you count the arrival of Axl Rose, lead singer for rock super group Guns N' Roses.

Rose arrived with bodyguard in tow at the Galveston Yacht Basin Wednesday afternoon for a speedboat ride with his small entourage.

Guns N’ Roses has been using Galveston as a home base while filming a video on a supertanker 10 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Black Dog Films line manager Ross Day.

The video is for the song “Estranged” from the group’s “Use Your Illusion II” album. Black Dog Films, based in Los Angeles, is overseeing the shoot and providing technical assistance, while Galveston film liaison Joan Weaver makes sure the group has accommodations and other local sup-port, Day said.

Though a 35-member crew has been in town preparing for the video for a week, Guns N' Roses spent little time on the island.

Galveston was chosen as home base for the shoot for a combination of reasons, Day said. Its proximity to Houston gave the production crew quick access to extra electrical equipment and cameras, and the
availability of the “Judith Prosperity” supertanker coincided with the band’s busy schedule. There also was the matter of the Gulf waters being the right color, he said.

The finished video should air on MTV by the end of October, Day said. It will feature a montage of shots filmed on the supertanker and at live performances in Long Beach, Calif., and Munich, Germany.

The group wrapped up shooting Wednesday and left for the Bahamas, where it will film the next sequence for the video.
