Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl was onstage with band at the time
By JIM HARRINGTON
PUBLISHED: September 4, 2021 at 10:57 p.m. | UPDATED: September 5, 2021 at 12:50 a.m.
BottleRock Napa Valley is very serious about its curfew.
The latest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act to find that out was Guns N’ Roses, who had the plug pulled on its headlining set — midway through the song “Paradise City” — after bumping up against the festival’s hard 10 p.m. curfew on Day Two (Sept. 4).
Not that Axl Rose and company noticed that the sound had been completely shut off. The seven-piece group — plus special guest Dave Grohl — just kept right on rocking in silence as BottleRock newcomers wondered what had happened and festival veterans quickly realized that the curfew issue had once again come into play.
The abrupt ending certainly came at an unfortunate time, as the group was in the process of bringing its 2 1/2-hour show to a thrilling conclusion during an all-star encore at the Napa Valley Expo in downtown Napa.
The group — featuring vocalist Rose, guitarists Slash and Richard Fortus, keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, and drummer Frank Ferrer — was first joined during the encore segment by pop star Pink, who added vocals to the love song “Patience.”
Then out strolled the Foo Fighters’ Grohl, who proceeded to help GNR rip into a big version of “Paradise City.” They were really cooking, nearing the part where Slash’s freight train of a guitar solo kicks in, when the whole thing went silent.
It was an anticlimatic ending to what had been a really strong Guns N’ Roses show, filled with great versions of such fan favorites as “It’s So Easy,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Live and Let Die” and “Mr. Brownstone.” Plus, basically every note that Slash played was amazing– especially the ones that populated the leads of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “November Rain,” which formed a powerful one-to-punch late in the set.
Of course, Grohl is no stranger to the hard curfew — which is one of the ways that BottleRock Napa tries to be a good neighbor to those living nearby in the community.
The vocalist-guitarist and his Foo Fighters faced a similar situation in 2017, when they also went past curfew and ended up getting the sound shut off during the song “Everlong.” Like GNR, the Foo Fighters just kept right on rocking.
Obviously, the situation didn’t bother Grohl and company too much, since the Foo Fighters are back at this year’s BottleRock and ready to headline on Day Three (Sept. 5). Perhaps the band will play by the rules this time around and end their set by 9:59 p.m. this time around.
Organizers also pulled the plug on the Cure in 2014, after that legendary modern rock act hit the 10 p.m. mark.
It also happened to Neil Young, who kept right on “Rockin’ in the Free World” after the sound was abruptly shut off at 10:01 p.m. during his BottleRock set in 2019.
For those who are counting, that’s four Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acts that have run into curfew problems at BottleRock.
The GNR curfew violation capped a long day of music, enjoyed by a sold-out crowd of some 40,000 fans. Miley Cyrus was the other big headliner, who drew a huge turnout to see her close out the Verizon Stage on Saturday. She was performing a version of “Wrecking Ball” about the time that Guns N’ Roses were settling into their encore.
The festival continues on Sunday with the Foo Fighters, Megan Thee Stallion, Village People, Future Islands, Black Pumas and many other acts — but hopefully no more curfew violations.

AUSTIN MURPHY
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
September 4, 2021, 8:07PM
The temperature was north of 90 degrees on the infield at the Jam Cellars stage, but that didn’t stop Antonio Gregor, a guitarist for the band Milky Chance, from rocking out in a varsity letter jacket with long, fuchsia sleeves. Sometimes you can’t let oppressive heat keep you from having a blast, or making a bold fashion statement.
Taking the stage at 2:45 Saturday afternoon, on the second day of the hugely popular but long-delayed BottleRock Napa Valley rockfest, the German band turned in a highly energetic set, from its just-released “Colorado” to the 2013 hit that put them on the map, “Stolen Dance.”
Taking their cue from high top Converse-clad lead vocalist Clemens Rehbein — who spent his hour on stage lunging, pogoing and unleashing an impressive array of roundhouse kicks — the youthful crowd hopped and danced and sang along, sweltering heat be damned.
Milky Chance was just one of 27 acts appearing Saturday on the festival’s four main stages. A few hours after they finished, a distinctly older crowd would gather in front of the same Jam Cellars stage for Guns N’ Roses.
Prowling the stage in ripped jeans and a backwards red ballcap, 59-year-old lead singer Axl Rose had no trouble turning back the clock. When he bade the crowd to “Let me hear ya scream!” during “Welcome To The Jungle,” it obliged with gusto. An hour after Rose and virtuoso guitarist Slash, originally named Saul Hudson, and their fellow Guns N’ Roses band members took the stage, Miley Cyrus kicked off her set on the Verizon Stage.
Guns N’ Roses ran afoul of BottleRock’s curfew, as organizers pulled the plug on the band as they were performing with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. The band members reportedly kept on rocking without electricity.
While GNR and Cyrus considered the headliners of Saturday night, no band was more frenetic, or more fun, it seemed, than Milky Chance.
“They just killed it,” said Kelsi, who along with her friend Allison had driven up from San Francisco for the show. The longish drive and toasty conditions weren’t nearly enough to keep the two women, who declined to give their last names, from enjoying the rush of their first live music since 2019.
This edition of BottleRock was delayed three times by COVID-19, the respiratory illness whose long shadow the festival still hasn’t escaped. Those in attendance were required to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative test for the disease. While masks were recommended outdoors, and mandatory in indoor spaces like The Spa, The Club and The Platinum Lounge, the vast majority of faces outside were uncovered, with a few notable exceptions, such as Cody Dickinson, drummer for the southern blues and rock band the North Mississippi Allstars, who played, exceedingly well, while breathing through an N95 mask.
Asked if she was worried about the delta variant of the coronavirus, 25-year-old Allison pointed out that she was vaccinated, then added, “I’m young, too, and I guess I’m like, just ready to be back on the scene.”
That captured the attitude of most of Saturday’s BottleRocketeers: they were overjoyed to have live music back in their lives.
“Oh my God, this is like my therapy,” said Susan Northen of Santa Rosa. “I’ve really missed being able to just dance and get all that bad juju out.”
A veteran of three BottleRock festivals, Northen foiled the sun with a tasteful green parasol she was happy to share with her friend, Tanya Acken, while they swayed to the beat of Mondo Cozmo, whose lead singer, Josh Ostrander, they admired very much.
“He’s got this jazz vibe to his music,” said Northen.
“A different twist,” added Acken, whose son Dmitri was at the show with his girlfriend, Camille Cavey.
“We met at BottleRock in 2019,” she said, “and have been wanting to get back ever since.”
Her cheekbones adorned with glitter that sparkled in the sun, Kim Moore of San Francisco said she was “thrilled, THRILLED” to be back at a concert. In this she was aligned with her companion Manolo Gonzalez, who had missed live music shows “so, so, so deeply, for a year and a half.”
Gonzalez, a native of Madrid, Spain, was clad in a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt. He saw the band three years ago in Austin, Texas, and “couldn’t believe how tight they were.”
Top-hatted lead guitarist Slash “looked exactly the same,” recalled Gonzalez. “Axl had put on a few pounds, but he still hits the notes, man. They crushed it.”
Not everyone was in such high spirits. Lori Vincent, who’d made the journey from Huntington Beach in Orange County, was still rolling her eyes after security guards confiscated her family’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before allowing them into the venue.
“We paid a lot of money for these tickets and were trying to save a little money,” she said. “What, are they worried I’m going to smuggle some LSD inside a PB&J?”
Vincent also noted that it was a long walk to find shade — a hardship on a warm day like Saturday — and that it would be nice if there a few more water refill stations.
The blazing sun could not keep Connor, a Napa local, from draping himself in a kind of black, sequined cape. “It is warm, now that you mention it,” he said. But he was delighted to be back at a music festival, after a long stretch of doing without, and wanted to wear something appropriately festive.
“Also, when he’s wearing that, he’s very easy to find in a crowd,” noted his friend, Chris. The two men declined to give their last names.
Even though nearly everyone in the crowd was vaccinated, Connor had misgivings about how few masks he was seeing.
“I had a friend recently pass from the delta variant,” he said. “We’re not out of this thing yet.”

Review by Ghost Cult Magazine, Sept. 17, 2021 (the part about GN'R):

FESTIVAL REVIEW: BottleRock Napa – Napa Valley California
[...]
Finally, it was time for the main event, Guns N Roses! The band drew the biggest crowd of the weekend and while they didn’t have their customary big show effects besides cool videos and lights, they put on a hell of a show! The entire band performed masterfully, especially Slash, being the legend he is who killed every solo and every riff. Axl Rose sang great, ran around a lot, hit all the important notes. They played mostly the hits, a few choice covers, some choice songs from the Axl led Chinese Democracy LP, and generally were as great as I remember them from a few years ago.
Then the unthinkable happened. I knew about the infamous curfew of Napa, as did the band. After 9:30 PM they started to play the very long cover “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and I was perplexed. A festival show is always a wildcard in the midst of your headline tour. I was worried they were gonna get cut off, and they did. Still, the band pulled out all the stops, with Pink coming out to help finish “Patience” before bowing to Axl in prayer, and Dave Grohl coming on to sing and riff as a backup for “Paradise City.” Sure enough at 10 PM on the dot, the sound was cut from PA. Fans jeered and were pissed, The band played on in a surreal scene, since they heard each other on stage. The road crew had nothing to do with this so don’t blame them. GNR is still a little too punk to care or be upset by the 1% since they run over time just about every night.

Re: 2021.09.04 - Bottlerock Music Festival, Napa, CA, USA
Review, Riff Magazine, Sept. 5, 2021 (the part about GN'R):
*
Guns N’ Roses
Guns N’ Roses hit the stage at a somewhat surprisingly prompt 7:30 p.m. start, as they were scheduled. Axl Rose and crew wasted little time getting down to business delivering the hits at a breakneck pace. The one-two punch of “It’s So Easy” into “Mr. Brownstone” set the tone right away. Some of the more casual fans in the sprawling crowd wondered what an older and wiser Guns N’ Roses would sound like now, and it turns out they sound pretty darn good.
Slash, Duff McKagan and company rolled through the first portion of the 23-song set with precision and energy. Slash certainly still reigns as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and that was on full display Saturday night. Few guitarists can elicit a roar of the crowd quite like Slash simply bending a string or blazing through a lightspeed solo.
Axl deserves every bit of credit for his performance; for a man nearly entering his sixth decade, he gave the performance everything he had and more. Rose ran from side to side on the stage, shimmied, shared and played maestro as the band rolled through its catalog of hits. GnR even mixed in Velvet Revolver track “Slither” early in the set—a song the band plays regularly now, in part as a tribute to Scott Weiland.
Following some extended jamming, the band built up the legendary “Welcome to the Jungle,” the opening notes of the intro riff innately bringing the crowd to life. While Axl Rose has lost a bit of speed on his fastball vocals over the years, he still shines through, especially in a situation like this. He kept the high notes in his back pocket, waiting for the right time to unleash, to stir the crowd into an even bigger frenzy.
The band rolled through tracks like “Live and Let Die,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “November Rain,” even mixing in a few covers like Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” as well as “Wichita Lineman.” Despite a few treats along the way, the true payoff for GnR fans came at the close of the show. The encore included P!nk on a rendition of “Patience.” That wouldn’t be the only surprise of the evening—Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters joined in on “Paradise City” with a bit of a twist.
In what’s become a bit of an unspoken BottleRock tradition, Guns N’ Roses played beyond (and quite a bit beyond) the 10 p.m. curfew allotted by the festival. But heck, that didn’t stop the crowd leading the much-less audible band at the end of “Paradise City.”

Guns N’ Roses Gets Cut Off and Miley Cyrus Brings the “Party in the USA” to BottleRock
By Meagan Sargent
Day two of BottleRock proved to be quite the battle of the bands. Miley Cyrus AND Guns N’ Roses closed out day two of the three-day music festival in Napa Valley.
Guns N’ Roses took the Jam Cellars stage and delivered an insane set complete with over 2.5 hours of hits. “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Absurd,” “Sweet Child of Mine,” “Knockin on Heaven’s Door,” were amongst some of the hits played during the BottleRock set.
Despite the true jam sesh, it wouldn’t be a BottleRock experience if without acknowledging Napa’s strict 10pm curfew (regardless of what band is on stage). Unfortunately the plug got pulled right in the middle of the band’s encore, “Paradise City,” featuring guest Dave Grohl. Watch the moment HERE!
The band has been unstoppable since 1985 and have reimagined the Los Angeles rock scene. The release of their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction has been the best-selling U.S. debut EVER and surpassed 30 million copies globally.
