Axl Rose Woodstock-Bound?
Everybody out of the mud pit! Axl's on!
Yes, it looks like Axl Rose's refurbished Guns N' Roses is apparently all set to sign on as a headliner for Woodstock '99, the three-day 30th anniversary "celebration" of the legendary 1969 rock festival.
While there's been no official confirmation of GNR's signing (the band's label did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment), a source familiar with the upcoming concert said the band was close to inking a deal.
Organizers promise to release a complete list of artists April 8, but various reports indicate that Rose will be joining the likes of Korn, Sheryl Crow, Metallica, Counting Crows, Aerosmith, Alanis Morissette, Bush, Willie Nelson, Hole, Sugar Ray and Ice Cube July 23-25 on multiple stages at Technology Park, a former Air Force base in Rome, New York, not far from Syracuse. Tickets, on sale later this month, will probably go for $150 for all three days.
This latest edition of Woodstock, the brainchild of promoters Michael Lang (who organized both the original lovefest and the 1994 mudbath sequel) and Robert Scher, was initially supposed to be part of a global celebration. But the scheduled European show was recently scrapped for at least a year. "It became clear that for Woodstock to be a safeand successful event in Europe more time was needed," Lang said.
As for the Guns N' Roses reunion, it isn't much of a reunion. In fact, frontman Rose is the only remaining member from the band's Appetite for Destruction heyday. Rose owns the GNR name; bandmates such as Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler are long gone.
Sources also report that Rose is nearly finished with the long-anticipated next GNR album. Of course, we've been hearing that for some time.
