Wow! What a great episode of Talkin’ Rock I’ve got for you today! Slash is out on tour in South America and checked in to let me know what was going on. He answered all my questions about…
The dichotomy of touring with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators vs. GNR
New music coming from GNR and rumors about it
Was he surprised at how big the GNR tour would be
Duff’s new album
His “appearance” on Motley Crue’s The Dirt
The time Zakk Wylde auditioned for Guns

Partial transcription:
-----------------------------------

Now this is a little bit different because you do have some Guns N’ Roses dates on festivals and stuff along with doing the Conspirators gigs, right?

Slash: Well, no. Actually the last shows - the end of the tour, is, like, August. I can’t remember the exact date.

I got ya.

Slash: And then, come September-October, we turn on the Guns thing, and then that goes from there. After those Guns dates, the festival dates, we’ll be working on the record and [line cut out - interruption]

[...]

I was just saying, it’s the biggest cliffhanger I’ve ever had in an interview. You were talking about the brand new record and all of a sudden it just cut out. So...

Slash (laughs): [...] Yeah, when we finish the tour in the fall, then we will commence on working a little bit on what's gonna be the next Guns record.

Yeah, the last time I talked to you or Duff a couple of months back, you weren’t really sure if were gonna do it. You were kinda saying, “Never say never” and stuff like that. So it’s pretty much set on stone now. You guys are ready to go with the new record, or at least are in the writing process and the whole thing.

Slash: Yeah, the thing is that we hadn’t really done anything yet. And I don’t want to indicate anything like, “Oh wow!” [...] I just wanted to be honest about it, and so there was really no telling what we were gonna do at that point. But at this point, I do know that we’re gonna do this one, and we’ve already started working on stuff, so there you go.

Yeah, I know. There’s rumors that you were at Axl’s house a few weeks ago or something. Can you comment on anything about that?

Slash: It’s funny, because there was a rumor that I was over there, yeah, and before I’d even been there. [...] It was a pain in the ass and annoying. But I’m excited about what we’ve got going on and everything, so it’s gonna be cool. It's freakin' awesome.

It’s really cool to hear it right straight from your mouth, cuz you there are so many rumors and people just spit stuff out on the net, as you well know. [...]

2019.05.28 - WRIF Detroit Talkin' Rock with Meltdown - Interview with Slash Empty Re: 2019.05.28 - WRIF Detroit Talkin' Rock with Meltdown - Interview with Slash

And excerpts from Blabbermouth:
----------------------------------------

Slash has confirmed that Guns N' Roses will start work on new music in the fall.

The guitarist had previously said that there was talk of Guns putting new ideas together, but he was reluctant to say that fans could definitely expect to hear fresh material from the reunited group.

Explaining why he had been ambiguous with his comments in the past, Slash told Meltdown of Detroit's 101 WRIF radio station (hear audio below): "The thing is, we haven't really done anything yet, and I don't like to say anything. You know how people used to promote shit and lie through their teeth? So I just wanted to be honest about it, and so there was really no telling what we were gonna do at that point. But at this point, I do know that we are gonna do this run [of shows in the fall], and we've already started working on stuff. So, there you go."

Slash also said that he found it frustrating when a photo showing his guitar rig setup was circulated online, with Internet chatter suggesting he had been on the way to singer Axl Rose's house to begin recording new GN'R music.

"There was a rumor that I was over there, and it was before I had even been there," Slash said. "So, I was, like, 'Jesus Christ.' And that's just a pain in the ass and annoying.' But I am excited about what we've got going on and everything, so it's gonna be cool."

2019.05.28 - WRIF Detroit Talkin' Rock with Meltdown - Interview with Slash Empty Re: 2019.05.28 - WRIF Detroit Talkin' Rock with Meltdown - Interview with Slash

More excerpts from Ultimate Guitar:
--------------------------------------------

During an appearance on the Meltdown show, Slash talked about Zakk Wylde briefly joining for Guns N' Roses back in the mid-'90s.

As reported, Zakk received an invitation to jam with GN'R around the time he finished working on 1995's "Ozzmosis" with Ozzy Osbourne. The jams ultimately led nowhere, prompting Zakk to use the material he had written at the time as a foundation for Black Label Society.

Slash now commented (transcribed by UG):

"Right before I left in 1996, I guess, Guns N' Roses were rehearsing at this place called The Complex in Santa Monica, California, and Zakk came down.

"I've always been buddies with Zakk, but in the certain context of Guns N' Roses, it was some weird kind of thing. We jammed for a little bit and then - not because of Zakk, but it just wasn't working. And pretty soon after, I was gone."

After the interviewer said he thinks that Axl Rose called the addition of Zakk "a two-headed snake - two really good guitar players going at it at the same time," Slash added:

"Well, you know, I think it was one of those desperate moves at the time when something needed to happen. It was just a crazy idea that happened. I think it would have been a little bit over the top if Zakk and myself were out there... Cool nonetheless."

Elsewhere in the interview, Slash said GN'R is planning to work on a new album after wrapping up the upcoming tour dates this fall, adding: "At this point, I do know that we're going to do this one, and we've already started working on stuff, so there you go."

Last April, the guitarist talked about his GN'R stint in more detail, telling Eon Music:

"Axl was telling me that he and the other guys were talking about getting another guitar player. He said they were just talking about guys and this and that, and Axl just said, 'Well what about Zakk?'

"I know all the guys, but I'd never met Axl before, but I knew Duff and I knew Slash, so it was just kind of just throwing it around as a joke, and then it was, 'Why don't we just ask Zakk what he's doing and have him come down?'

"So, I just went down to jam with the guys. It's not even like an audition at that point; Jimmy Page is not going to audition for The Rolling Stones, it's just like, 'Jimmy, do you want to come down and jam with us?' 'Yeah, okay, no problem.' So, it was more that, just a bunch of clowns getting together and jamming."

How far did things go with those Guns N' Roses sessions?

"We jammed a bunch of things, but nothing was happening at the time with the fellas. It was Slash, Axl, Duff, Matt, Dizzy was down there - so all the guys, and then I just came in, and it was jamming.

"We did demos and stuff over at Duff's house in the studio. We just had a bunch of riffs and stuff like that, but nothing was going on; it was in limbo, it was just laying there, and I was like, 'I've got such an outstanding booze bill, I've got to pay this debt off,' so I said, 'Fellas, I’ve got to get back to work, just let me know what's going on.'"
