RICHARD FORTUS
Pseudonyms/former names:
Richard Fortus.
Date of birth:
November 17, 1966.
Band position:
Rhythm guitar.
Time with Guns N' Roses:
2002-present.
Shows with the band:
As of {UPDATEDATE} Richard has played at least {RICHARDSHOWS} shows with Guns N' Roses.
Biography:
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Fortus cut his teeth throughout the Midwest with his band, The Eyes. The four-piece alternative band independently released "Freedom in a Cage", which was produced by David Probst. After signing with Atlantic Records, they changed their name to Pale Divine. They subsequently toured the U.S. in support of their only album, Straight to Goodbye, opening for The Psychedelic Furs.
After The Psychedelic Furs split up, Fortus formed Love Spit Love with Richard and Tim Butler. When The Furs reformed in 2000, Fortus joined the group as second guitarist and played on the live album 'Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live'.
Fortus has since left Love Spit Love and is now a member of Guns N' Roses, replacing Axl Rose's childhood friend Paul Tobias. In Guns N' Roses, Richard plays both rhythm and lead guitar. Axl is very pleased with Richard's work and has said, "He's an amazing lead player and very technically skilled. He really likes the pocket that Brain sets and the two of them click with Tommy so we finally have the real deal rhythm section, as Richard is a proven professional. Basically, Richard's the guy that we always were looking for."
On November 5, 2005, Richard's wife, Jen Fortus, gave birth to a daughter. Her name is Paisley Piper Fortus [Wikipedia]

We’re fortunate to have found Richard who has this vibe kind of like Izzy but with amazing feel. The first thing I heard Richard play was the beginning of 'Stray Cat Blues' by the Stones and he did it with the right feel. Richard likes to play rhythm. He’s an amazing lead player and very technically skilled. He really likes the pocket that Brain sets and the two of them click with Tommy so we finally have the real deal rhythm section, as Richard is a proven professional. Basically, Richard’s the guy that we always were looking for. I think that we’ll go on to write some very interesting things with Richard and he’s already done some rhythm work and some leads on the album [GN'R press release with Axl interview, gnronline.com, 2002] |
Me and Richard will be jamming and talking about old Yes music. And actually, the first song that me and Richard both learned to play was Rock N' Roll Hoochie Koo! [HTGTH, September 2010] |
Fortus is super focused and disciplined [Live chat, March 2012] |
Richard, he’s a great player, songwriter [Boomerocity, January 2013] |
Richard and Bumble are two of my closest friends, just amazing, amazing musicians.[Nightrain chat, November 2013] |

Re: Richard Fortus
I've seen a YouTube interview with Richard (talking about gear) and quote I found somewhere of Richard commenting on working with Izzy. If I find them again I'll pop them in here - they should be in here - if that's okay.

If it is a quote ABOUT Izzy then it should go here: https://www.a-4-d.com/t89-izzy-stradlin
It's probably this: I really love Izzy. He's a real talent and it's easy to see where a good 90% of the song riffs on Appetite came from after having played with him. I had the oppourtunity of getting to know him while we were in Europe, and he's probably become one of my favorite people. He's very genuine. We have a lot in common and he is someone that i can really relate to. It's an honor to call him a friend [GNRsource.com, February 2007].
And there's a few vids of Richard talking gear in the "Current Members" section.

That's the one - I had a feeling you'd know exactly what I was referring to. I was thinking I likely saw it when someone posted a copy of the quotes about Izzy at the time from A4D to beenafix and the members (I'm one) really enjoyed it. I gave you a shout out that your effort in compiling it was appreciated there.

That's cool . I hope they come here and help to expand the Izzy quote list, it can't possibly be comprehensive yet (I still have to add some quotes from Duff.

HaH!
This is my favorite picture from this tour leg so far, my next desk top background, and the tour has only just begun. Had to come over to A4D and see what's shakin'. Thanks for adding it in here Soulmonster.

A quintessential Rock Star photo. If I was 14 again this would be a big poster on my bedroom wall.Soulmonster wrote:

Re: Richard Fortus
Yes, these pictures should be used by rock magazines to spread the imagery of the current band, to establish cognisance of what is GN'R today and make kids connect and idolize the band members. It would do tons of good for the band.

Re: Richard Fortus
I know you know, and it is just a question of semantics, but rock music magazines don't actually "make" kids do anything but if a kid needs a connection and/or an idol then Richard Fortus is there for them and one that can make parents proud, including his own - the guy has a fantastic work ethic besides being cool. Agreed rock magazines should use Kat's photos to spread the imagery of the current band and it looks to me like gunsandroses.com is on to this. Same applies to the rest of this band's members... staying power in spite of the odds. It's a "Rocky" story and explains the existence of the array of GNR forums and archives, from Marc Canter's book to this website. Power to the people and thank YOU man .Soulmonster wrote:Yes, these pictures should be used by rock magazines to spread the imagery of the current band, to establish cognisance of what is GN'R today and make kids connect and idolize the band members. Re: Richard Fortus
Yet, magazines still use the worst pictures they can find (pics were Axl looks particularly bloated) to go with their negative articles on GN'R. It's a pity when there are so many cool pictures of the band to be found now.

" richardfortus @richardfortus
Look for the digital release of Country Bones full album "Let It Ride" soon on iTunes! Featuring Richard Fortus... http://fb.me/1r6R7nbYX "
Richard, that musical slut, has been recording with yet another artist. He sure gets around - does he take the time to sleep? I haven't heard this yet but I plan to. Update: Gave it a bit listen on Amazon - it's got some boogie. First rate musicianship on guitars, naturally, drums and some honkytonk piano nicely done but not overdone. Lifts the songs out from mediocre country but not sure I'd buy the whole album. I'd like the danceable stuff and the last song, The Rainbow, is more like the kind of country song I find listenable if it ain't rockaboogie style. Listening to Richard Fortus playing country-fried licks worked just fine for me though.
I'm hoping Izzy will tap Richard to guest on his next solo album... out soon if it was up to me.
