HEARTBREAK HOTEL
Album:
Only played live.

Written by:
Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton.

Musicians:
Vocals: Axl Rose; lead Guitar: Slash; rhythm guitar: Izzy Stradlin; bass: Duff McKagan; drums: Steven Adler.

Live performances:
This Elvis Prestley cover was played a lot in 1985 and 1986. In total it has, as of {UPDATEDATE}, at least been played {HEARTBREAKSONGS} times.

Lyrics:
Well, since my baby left me,
I found a new place to dwell.
It's down at the end of lonely street
at Heartbreak Hotel.

You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

And although it's always crowded,
you still can find some room.
Where broken hearted lovers
do cry away their gloom.

You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

Well, the Bell hop's tears keep flowin',
and the desk clerk's dressed in black.
Well they been so long on lonely street
They ain't ever gonna look back.

You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

Hey now, if your baby leaves you,
and you got a tale to tell.
Just take a walk down lonely street
to Heartbreak Hotel.

Quotes:
Talking about the time when he entered the band: Izzy and Axl already had some songs, and the other guys knew them: "Think About You," "Anything Goes," "Move To The City," "Shadow of Your Love," and "Don't Cry." And we did sped-up punk versions of the Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" [Duff's autobiography, "It's So Easy", 2011, p. 59].

About their 2nd concert: [...] and closed with Heartbreak Hotel, which was Axl's choice. Axl often warmed up his voice with an Elvis cover and was a big Elvis fan going back to his days growing up in the Midwest. "Heartbreak" got the biggest response (...) ["My Appetite for Destruction", 2010].

The only thing we didn't record [for The Spaghetti Incident?] that we should have done is 'Heartbreak Hotel'. I'm going to try to get us into the studio to record it for a B-side. We used to do a killer version of thta song, but we haven't played it in a long time [Kerrang! March 1994].

'Heartbreak Hotel' performed live at unknown date with demo version overdubbed:

Last year, we recorded 27 songs when we first got signed. I do a version of "Heartbreak Hotel," and live I always sing "so fuckin' lonely." I went in to record it and I didn't cuss when I did it—I wasn't even thinking about it. After [Geffen] got the tapes, they called me up and said, "You gotta go back and do 'Heartbreak Hotel' again; put the 'fuck' back in." I heard this from Chappel Music, too, who have the rights to that or administers it.
