Preview in The Express Times, May 13, 2014:

Guns N' Roses in Bethlehem: What to expect during tonight's concert

Dustin Schoof | The Express-Times By Dustin Schoof | The Express-Times

Tonight will mark Guns N' Roses' first performance in the Lehigh Valley since rocking the former Airport Road Music Hall in Allentown in 1987.

That is assuming the band shows up to the Sands Bethlehem Event Center on schedule. (Or at all.) Guns N' Roses has long been known for their tendency to start concerts on their own time.

Regardless of which members, current or former, are at fault for their tardiness, the likelihood of Rose and Co. -- based on their track record -- starting at, or close to, the scheduled show time is slim. (The 9 o'clock concert is sold out and there is one opening act.)

The band did perform, as advertised, in 2012 at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia -- even if it was after midnight when they played their first song. That night was a much different affair than what happened a decade earlier, when Guns N' Roses did not bother to show up for their concert at the Wells Fargo Center (then the First Union Center). The 2002 no-show caused a riot and resulted in a handful of concertgoers reportedly being sent to the hospital. (Rose apologized during the 2012 concert and blamed his manager.)

I am hoping, especially for the fans' sake, that Rose and the rest of the band will not leave the crowd hanging in the balance for two or three hours before coming out from behind the curtain.

I hope Rose will belt out "Paradise City," "Nightrain," "Sweet Child O' Mine," "Rocket Queen," "My Michelle," "Welcome to the Jungle," "Civil War" and all of the GNR staples without (much) delay and give fans the sort of raucous -- and relatively prompt -- rock 'n' roll show the band is capable of delivering. (Even if it is without the classic lineup of Slash, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin.)

Heck, I'm even willing to sit through cuts from "Chinese Democracy" if it means having the concert start on time.

Because let's face it: Even the most lush of jungles have their rough patches.

Review in The Express Times, May 14, 2014:

Guns N' Roses does their best Guns N' Roses impression with Bethlehem concert - REVIEW

Axl Rose on Tuesday night brought the latest incarnation of Guns N' Roses to the Lehigh Valley for the first time in 27 years.

But it wasn't really Guns N' Roses so much as it was Guns N' Roses doing their best Guns N' Roses impression at the Sands Bethlehem Event Center.

The band's three lead/rhythm guitarists each made it clear they are more than capable of handling -- and mimicking -- the riffs originally made famous by former, and founding, members Slash and Izzy Stradlin. Current guitarists DJ Ashba, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thai and Richard Fortus are extremely talented in their own right. But their interpretations of the well-known leads and solos often became lost in self-indulging and excessive variations.

Then there is Rose.

The enigmatic front-man was surprisingly quiet throughout the night. He did take a minute to address the sold-out crowd. "How you doin'? This is a nice place you got here. We'll try to stop by more often," he said.

Rose, for the most part, still has his vocal chops -- dropping his signature rafter-shaking howl several times throughout the night. His voice is still powerful and commanding -- when it is on target. Rose's pipes' wavered between strained and pitch-perfect. He soared on "Live and Let Die," but was scratchy on "Rocket Queen."

Rose's vocal inconsistency was reflective of Guns N' Roses' overall sound.

The original, or "classic" Guns N' Roses lineup of Rose, Slash, Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler was rough around the edges. But that is also what gave the band its appeal and allure. They were a rock 'n' roll locomotive that seemed to constantly teeter on the brink of derailment. This latest Guns N' Roses configuration tried their best to emulate that vibe. But Tuesday's performance lacked the same fluidity and controlled chaos.

To their credit, the band made sure to hit all of the familiar Guns N' Roses beats. "Welcome to the Jungle," "Mr. Brownstone," "It's So Easy," "Patience," "You Could Be Mine," "Nightrain," "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "November Rain" all made it into the set list.

"November Rain," with Rose perched at a powder blue piano at the foot of the stage, was a highlight. But the band's cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" -- a staple of Guns N' Roses' live show dating back to the late 1980s -- dragged on for a few chords too long. The group's cover of The Who's "The Seeker" also sounded shaky.

Though he (briefly) delighted fans with his signature snake-like dance/shimmy, for someone who is the face and last remaining original member, Rose spent a good chunk of the concert obscured off-stage. Several times Rose introduced a band member and then disappeared to let him take the spotlight for a solo -- most of which meandered and brought the pace of the concert to a crawl. The solo spots grew tiresome as the show dragged on (clocking in at 2 1/2 hours.)

The group had no problem recreating Guns N' Roses' back catalog. Yet it was hard to shake the feeling that the band was trying to prove to naysayers and curious parties that they can play their predecessors' licks just as good, if not better.

At least it took less than 45 minutes for the band to set foot on stage.
