Excellent article about tonight's show:

It's finally here.

Guns N' Roses comes back to Indiana for the first time in 19 years when the hard rock band led by vocalist and Lafayette native Axl Rose plays at 8 tonight at downtown Indianapolis' Conseco Fieldhouse.

And how cool is it that one the band's first shows since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be in Indiana? Will Hoosier fans be treated to even more spectacualar rock event? Will Rose be in a celebratory mood?

The tour started in October and has been incident-free besides a cancellation on Nov. 23 in Albany, N.Y., due to "production issues." Most show reviews have been positive. This tour is scheduled to go through Dec. 31 in Las Vegas.

This has not been your typical GNR tour. It's been relatively drama free. Rose hasn't jumped in the crowd or stormed off the stage in a huff. Those hijinks are so early '90s. Twenty years later, Rose is giving his fans a tremendous show. Most have been clocking in at three hours.

However, it will be interesting to see how Rose will behave tonight. Will he rant and rave about his hatred for Indiana like he did in 1992 at Market Square Arena? When Rose retires from rock, I don't think the Conventions & Visitors Bureau will be hiring him.

Will he point out the I-65 reference in guitarist and fellow Lafayette native Izzy Stradlin's excellent tune "Dust N' Bones"? Will Stradlin make a guest appearance tonight? He was recently sighted at McGuire Music in Lafayette.

A very cool clip of the song is on YouTube from GNR's 1991 show at Deer Creek Music Center. Rose introduces the song and hands over the mic to Stradlin. After a few bars, Rose returns to scream "I-65!" with his fellow native Hoosier and GNR founder. It would bring chills to any Hoosier fan of GNR. At the end of the clip, Rose points out a Q95 shirt in the crowd. "I grew up listening to that," Rose told the crowd. "That station saved my (expletive) life."

Little from the 1992 set at the Hoosier Dome can be found on YouTube. That was the show with Metallica and Faith No More. Guns went on really late, which was typical at the time. Rose also ranted about his time in Indiana.

A report from the Nov. 15 show in Chicago stated that there was a lot of time between the opener and Guns but the crowd could see the band's intricate staging and lights being built and instruments being checked. There was no long wait once everything was constructed and tested.

Without giving too much away, a set list from Sunday's gig in Nashville, Tenn., shows the first time "Civil War" was played since 1993. Seven songs from "Appetite for Destruction" and seven from "Chinese Democracy" were in the mix. There were surprise covers and most members of the band get a solo.

The opening tune has been "Chinese Democracy" at most shows of the tour so far. All of the hits are there as is "Estranged," a favorite from "Use Your Illusion II." The Nashville set list consisted of about 30 songs.

If you're heading to the show tonight, strap in for a long night but a long night you will never forget.

While Rose's relationship with his home state hasn't always been, er, rosy, I'm expecting a huge homecoming for the most famous person to come from Lafayette.

Review from Indystar.com:

It's fitting that Guns N' Roses was on tour to promote its "Use Your Illusion" albums (the concurrently released "I" and "II") the last time the rock band played a show in Indiana.

Nearly 20 years later, the songs of "Illusion" represented the best moments of Thursday's sprawling Guns N' Roses concert at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Larger-than-life ballads "November Rain," "Estranged" and "Don't Cry" sounded timeless while generating waves of adulation from an estimated audience of 8,000.

Aside from vocalist Axl Rose and keyboard player Dizzy Reed, the personnel of Guns N' Roses is completely different when compared to that 1992 performance at the Hoosier Dome.

Former lead guitarist Slash and rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin (who technically exited GNR in 1991) have given way to a three-headed lead/rhythm brigade of Dj Ashba, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and Richard Fortus. Duff McKagen is out on bass, and Tommy Stinson is in. On drums, Matt Sorum has been replaced by Frank Ferrer. And Chris Pitman is a keyboard player to augment Reed.

Rose didn't build the band's current roster to replicate the street-metal surge of 1987's "Appetite for Destruction," and what's salvageable from the 15-years-in-the-making "Chinese Democracy" project of 2008 seems to be a continuation of the "Illusion" era.

Rose assembled his eight-member team with "Illusion" in mind: Performances are simultaneously epic and tender, focused and finessed.

It would be a stretch to argue that the "Illusion" albums are "better" than "Appetite for Destruction." Guns N' Roses probably wouldn't have been voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week without the game-changing impact of "Appetite."

But Rose made his most daring artistic explorations during the "Illusion" era, and the current band is better equipped to execute that vision -- especially in light of the strained working relationships of Rose, Slash and Stradlin in the early 1990s.

Bumblefoot's clean, fluid guitar solo during "Estranged" wasn't the work of any mop-up player, and Rose's entire supporting cast gave "You Could Be Mine" an engaging industrial texture reminiscent of Ministry or White Zombie.

Rose's voice proved to be warmed up and wide open for two notable cover songs from the "Illusion" era: Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" and Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."

Regarding "Chinese Democracy," the ballads "Street of Dreams" and "This I Love" fared better in concert than a smattering of tracks that hinted at Rose grasping for a clue while the New Metal revolution rose and fell during the past decade.

The crowd-pleasing hits of "Appetite" came across as nostalgic larks.

Rose revived the dance moves of his younger self, confetti flooded the arena during show-closing "Paradise City," and Monticello, Ind., native Ashba played Slash's distinctive opening riffs to "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child of Mine" with ease.

Rose -- who grew up in Lafayette, Ind., and once compared his home state to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz -- complimented the Indianapolis audience for its "warm and welcoming" nature. He called Conseco Fieldhouse a "great building," and said the band would try to make it back to Indiana before another 19 years pass.

Unlike many headlining acts that call it a night after 90 minutes on stage (or even 75 in some alarming instances), Guns N' Roses performed for 2 hours and 53 minutes.

If an edit is in order, a cover of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" can be left in the rehearsal room. Within minutes, "November Rain" made the '70s hit appear puny.

The show didn't begin until 11 p.m., but the start time wasn't a minute later than planned.

2011.12.08 - Conseco Field House, Indianapolis, USA Empty Re: 2011.12.08 - Conseco Field House, Indianapolis, USA

Post by Soulmonster Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:51 pm

And a very sweet review from jconline.com:

"It's nice to be back home. Thank you for being so warm and welcoming."

These were the words from a kinder, gentler Axl Rose Thursday night at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Almost 20 years ago, Rose venomously spewed unkind sentiment towards the Hoosier State at a show in Market Square Arena.

Now 49, Rose was a teddy bear compared to those tumultuous days in the early 1990s. However, he and his seven-piece showed no mercy during an incredible three-hour performance.

"It was good to be back home. Thank you very much," he said after a rousing rendition of "Paradise City" at the end of the night, er, morning. The show ended right before 2 a.m. It started at around 10:45 p.m. There was very little wait between openers Black Label Society and the headlining Guns N' Roses.

It seemed Rose outlasted his audience. It's been known for decades that Rose is the ultimate night owl. Once it got past midnight, the Lafayette native went into overdrive. He sounded better. He looked better. He had loads of energy running around the stage and doing his trademark shimmies and sidestep dance moves. His only "serpentine" movements were early in the set for a goosebump-inducing version of "Welcome to the Jungle."

Some of the crowd began to file out as it got into the a.m. hours but most stayed.

Surprisingly, it was the slow tune, "Don't Cry," that got Rose really rocking and into the performance. This is the song that helped launch the career of Shannon Hoon, who sang back-ups on the "Use Your Illusion" versions and appeared on the video. Rose and the late Hoon are both Lafayette natives.

Rose and his three guitar attack of DJ Ashba, Richard Fortus and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal started off like a freight train - even though "Nightrain" came later.

With video screens, lights and plenty of pyrotechnics, Guns N' Roses led off with "Chinese Democracy" - the best song on the 2008 album of the same name - followed by the classic hat trick of "Welcome to the Jungle," "It's So Easy" and "Mr. Brownstone." This fast start allowed quite a few lesser tunes from "Chinese Democracy" to get into the first half of the set list.

Rose's voice was amazing, especially in the second half. It got stronger as the night went on. Those early songs require impressive pipes. Sure, Rose in 1991 could have nailed some of the classics better but 20 years later, the singer still belted them out. The newer songs seem a bit easier on the vocal chords and Rose's performance helped them keep the near sold-out crowd's attention during these lesser known tracks.

Rose zipped off-stage during jam out parts of songs and each member of the band got his share of the spotlight with solos and covers. I was one of maybe two people in the crowd who freaked out when bassist Tommy Stinson led the band with the Dead Boys classic "Sonic Reducer." Stinson, who formed The Replacements, was a ball to watch.

But it was Rose's night first, and second was guitarist DJ Ashba, who was born in Monticello and raised in rural Illinois. It seemed he had every family and friend still living in the Midwest there, and the youngest member of the band at 39 became a fan favorite. Rose acknowledged Ashba's Hoosier roots along with his. He mentioned a third Hoosier in the camp. Izzy Stradlin, perhaps? No, it was some guy on the production crew. Sadly, there were no Stradlin sightings on-stage.

Rose mentioned Guns N' Roses' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and thanked the fans for the honor. The induction was announced on Wednesday. The crowd erupted with approval.

Only three f-bombs came out Rose's lips between songs. He didn't need to spew attitude between tunes. The music spoke for him.

It was surreal to see Rose having a good time and clowning around with his bandmates. A bit heavier than the "Use Your Illusion" era, Rose wore a leather jacket, jeans, pointy cowboy boots, a wallet chain, red handkerchief out of the back pocket, several hats and sunglasses, and a curious T-shirt with a cartoon rabbit with a bright red heart. He went hatless for awhile with a gray scarf around his head, revealing shoulder-length strawberry blond hair.

Old school GNR fans were treated to rare renditions of "Estranged" and "Civil War." Before this tour, these songs had not been played live since the early '90s.

Would Thursday's crowd prefer to see the classic lineup of GNR? Of course. Will it ever happen? If it doesn't happen in 2012, I doubt it ever will. But from the looks of the soccer mom swaying with her arms in the air during "Patience," the drunk Middle Eastern guy freaking out to "Rocket Queen," the dudes with hair that has turned gray since the last time GNR came to Indy, the beautiful women decked out like they were going to be in a video shoot, the guy imitating early '90s Rose with the kilt and catcher's equipment get-up, the little girl sitting on her daddy's shoulder making the rock sign and singing every word to "Sweet Child o' Mine," it didn't matter on this night. Rose brought it for three solid hours.

It was an unforgettable show, thanks to Lafayette's famous son. A son that finally showed warm feelings for Indiana.
